Program Description

The course aims at teaching basic sentence structures. It focuses on practice, and the use of fundamental grammatical elements. The students will be given exercises to train them in the skills of constructing grammatically correct and effective spoken and written English sentences.

  • Linguistic Proficiency: Demonstrate high-level mastery of the four language skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) and apply them in various professional and academic contexts.
  • Literary Analysis: Critically analyze and interpret major works of English literature (poetry, drama, and fiction) from different historical periods and cultural backgrounds.
  • Linguistic Understanding: Identify and explain the core components of English linguistics, including phonologymorphologysyntax, and semantics.
  • Critical Thinking: Synthesize complex ideas and apply theoretical frameworks to evaluate literary texts and linguistic phenomena.
  • Translation Skills: Possess a foundational ability to translate various texts between English and Arabic, maintaining cultural and linguistic nuances.
  • Research Competency: Use academic databases and research methodologies to conduct independent studies in language or literature.
  • Cultural Awareness: Engage with the diverse cultures and values of the English-speaking world while maintaining a strong sense of national and Islamic identity.
  • Secondary School Certificate: Must hold a Saudi secondary school certificate (Science or Humanities stream) or an equivalent recognized qualification.
  • Composite Score: Admission is highly competitive and based on a “Weighted Average” of:
    • High School GPA (30%)
    • General Aptitude Test (Qiyas/GAT) (30%)
    • General Achievement Test (Tahsili/SAAT) (40%)
  • Common First Year (CFY): Students are first admitted to the Humanities Track of the CFY. After completing two semesters, they are allocated to the English department based on their CFY GPA and departmental capacity.
  • Departmental Placement Test: Applicants often must pass a specific English Language Proficiency Test or interview conducted by the department to ensure they can handle the academic rigor of literature and linguistics courses.
  • General Fitness: Applicants must be medically fit and demonstrate good conduct.
