Program Description
- Linguistic Proficiency: Demonstrate high-level mastery of the four language skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) and apply them in various professional and academic contexts.
- Literary Analysis: Critically analyze and interpret major works of English literature (poetry, drama, and fiction) from different historical periods and cultural backgrounds.
- Linguistic Understanding: Identify and explain the core components of English linguistics, including phonology, morphology, syntax, and semantics.
- Critical Thinking: Synthesize complex ideas and apply theoretical frameworks to evaluate literary texts and linguistic phenomena.
- Translation Skills: Possess a foundational ability to translate various texts between English and Arabic, maintaining cultural and linguistic nuances.
- Research Competency: Use academic databases and research methodologies to conduct independent studies in language or literature.
- Cultural Awareness: Engage with the diverse cultures and values of the English-speaking world while maintaining a strong sense of national and Islamic identity.
- Secondary School Certificate: Must hold a Saudi secondary school certificate (Science or Humanities stream) or an equivalent recognized qualification.
- Composite Score: Admission is highly competitive and based on a “Weighted Average” of:
- High School GPA (30%)
- General Aptitude Test (Qiyas/GAT) (30%)
- General Achievement Test (Tahsili/SAAT) (40%)
- Common First Year (CFY): Students are first admitted to the Humanities Track of the CFY. After completing two semesters, they are allocated to the English department based on their CFY GPA and departmental capacity.
- Departmental Placement Test: Applicants often must pass a specific English Language Proficiency Test or interview conducted by the department to ensure they can handle the academic rigor of literature and linguistics courses.
- General Fitness: Applicants must be medically fit and demonstrate good conduct.
