Program Description

This program aims to prepare qualified translators in translation to and from French.

Linguistic Mastery

  • Proficiency: Achieve an advanced level (equivalent to B2/C1 on the CEFR scale) in listening, speaking, reading, and writing.
  • Grammar & Phonetics: Mastery of French syntax, morphology, and phonetic systems to ensure clear and accurate communication.

Translation & Interpretation

  • Bi-directional Skills: Ability to translate complex texts from French to Arabic and vice-versa, maintaining semantic and stylistic integrity.
  • Technical Specialization: Proficiency in translating specialized content for media, legal, medical, and diplomatic sectors.

Cultural & Analytical Skills

  • Cultural Context: Deep understanding of the history, literature, and social values of France and the wider Francophone world.
  • Critical Analysis: Ability to analyze linguistic structures and cultural nuances to solve translation challenges in professional settings.

Professionalism & Ethics

  • Professional Values: Commitment to the ethics of the translation profession, including confidentiality and accuracy.
  • Digital Literacy: Proficiency in using Computer-Assisted Translation (CAT) tools and digital linguistic databases.

Prospective students must navigate both university-wide and college-specific criteria:

Common First Year (CFY): Applicants must first be admitted to the Humanities Colleges Track. Direct entry into the French major is not typically available for high school graduates.

Composite Score: Admission to the CFY is based on a weighted ratio of:
High School GPA: (30%–40%)
General Aptitude Test (GAT/Qudrat): (30%)
Achievement Test (SAAT/Tahsili): (30%–40%)

Departmental Allocation: After completing the CFY, students compete for seats in the French Department. Selection is based on their Cumulative GPA from the preparatory year. A higher GPA increases the likelihood of being placed in this specific major.

Availability: The program is open to both male and female students on their respective campuses.
