Program Description

The Department of Mathematics provides students with a robust and extensive background in Mathematics and enables students to appreciate the power of Mathematics and its role in human culture. This track is a professionally oriented program designed to provide opportunities for students to develop functional competence in Mathematics and an appreciation for the contribution of Mathematics to Science and Engineering. With this track, the department aims to prepare students to pursue graduate studies in Mathematics or other related fields or embark on a career in industry or education.

Students graduating with a BS in Mathematics will be able to:

(1) Manipulate and analyze data numerically and/or graphically.

(2) Communicate mathematical ideas, written and verbally, in a clear and organized way.

(3) Relate mathematics to real world problems.

(4) Use appropriate technology to analyze and solve mathematical problems.

(5) Demonstrate in depth information about area of specialty.

(6) Demonstrate ability to receive professional training to enhance employability and success in a doctoral program.

Hold a secondary school certificate recognized by the Lebanese Ministry of Education, obtain “permission” from the Equivalence Committee for foreign programs, competitive admission based on 50% SAT and 50% grades 10 and 11 averages.

1. Foundational and Core Mathematics

Students in the applied track take similar foundational courses to the general track, focusing on the essential tools needed for application:
  • Calculus Sequence: Single, multi-variable, and vector calculus.
  • Linear Algebra: Vector spaces, matrices, eigenvalues, etc.
  • Differential Equations: Ordinary and partial differential equations, which are fundamental for modeling physical systems.
  • Probability and Statistics: Covers the theoretical basis of probability and statistical methods to analyze data.
  • Real and Complex Analysis: Provides the theoretical rigor necessary for advanced applications.
2. Key Applied Mathematics Courses

The applied focus is evident in specialized courses designed for problem-solving:
  • Mathematical Modeling: Formulation, analysis, and implementation of models for a wide range of application areas.
  • Numerical Methods: Techniques for solving mathematical problems that are not analytically solvable, often involving computer algorithms (e.g., numerical differentiation and integration).
  • Optimization: Covers methods for finding the best solutions to complex problems, including linear and non-linear programming.
  • Computer Programming: Courses in programming (e.g., C++, Java, etc.) are essential to implement mathematical models and algorithms.
  • Discrete Mathematics/Graph Theory: Used in areas like computer science and network analysis.
