Program Description

The Master of Arts in Theoretical Linguistics program aims to provide students with the basic knowledge, skills, and theoretical foundations of the field of theoretical linguistics.

  • Foundational Mastery: Demonstrate in-depth understanding of the core fields of theoretical linguistics, including Syntax, Semantics, Phonology, and Morphology.
  • Analytical Skills: Ability to analyze complex linguistic data from diverse languages using modern theoretical frameworks.
  • Research Proficiency: Conduct independent, in-depth scientific research, including the ability to write a substantial thesis or research project that addresses significant questions in the field.
  • Interdisciplinary Application: Integrate linguistic theory with related disciplines such as Psycholinguistics, Language Acquisition, and Sociolinguistics.
  • Professional Readiness: Qualify for teaching roles at the university level or technical roles in the public and private sectors requiring linguistic expertise.
  • Advanced Academic Prep: Develop the theoretical and methodological foundations required to successfully pursue Doctoral (Ph.D.) studies.

-Applicants need to fulfill both general university graduate standards and specific departmental requirements. These include having a bachelor’s degree in a relevant field such as English, Arabic, Computer Science, or Psychology from an accredited university, with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.25 out of 5.0. English proficiency is required, demonstrated by a minimum score of 6.0 on the Academic IELTS or equivalent. 

– Applicants must also achieve a score of at least 65 on the General Aptitude Test (GAT) or 265 on the GRE-General test.

– Passing a departmental written examination and submitting two letters of recommendation.
