Program Description

The Master’s program at the Faculty of Law at the University of Petra, offered in both the thesis and comprehensive tracks, was launched in the 2023–2024 academic year. Its aim is to prepare legal researchers and practitioners who possess advanced analytical skills, as well as the ability to interpret and apply law across various legal fields, within a stimulating and modern learning environment that fosters creativity and critical thinking.

The program combines theoretical study with practical application under the supervision of a distinguished faculty with extensive academic and field experience, thereby contributing to the preparation of graduates who are scientifically and professionally qualified and capable of actively advancing legal practice and scholarly research at both the national and regional levels

– Familiarity with methods of scientific research in legal sciences, including descriptive, analytical, comparative, and inductive research approaches.

Bachelor’s with Good GPA, English score 5 IELTS or equivalent.

1. Methods of Legal Research
This course explores the concept, principles, and methodologies of legal research. Students are introduced to essential tools, methods, and approaches in legal research, including the use of the Internet for scholarly inquiry. It emphasizes practical application through case studies, logical reasoning, and critical reviews of existing research. The course also covers research ethics, professional responsibilities, and the integration of interdisciplinary knowledge, connecting legal studies with humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences.

2. In-Depth Studies in Civil Law
This course examines the general theory of obligations, including their sources, provisions, and proof. It also covers specific contracts such as sales, leases, agency, and contracting. Students engage in detailed, analytical, and comparative studies of specialized topics, including theories of invalidity, civil liability, liability for loss, and electronic contracts.

3. In-Depth Studies in Commercial Law
This course provides a comprehensive overview of commercial law, including commercial papers and corporate law. It also includes an analytical and comparative study of specialized topics such as commercial contracts, banking law, stock market regulations, and documentary credits.

4. In-Depth Studies in Administrative Law
The course introduces administrative law, highlighting its nature, origin, and development locally and globally. Students study Jordan’s administrative structure and the evolution of the public legal personality from the state’s establishment to the current decentralization law. Key topics include administrative controls, public services, administrative contracts, and administrative liability.

5. In-Depth Studies in Public International Law
This course provides an introduction to public international law, including its sources, actors, state responsibility, and dispute resolution mechanisms. Students examine peaceful settlement methods, judicial bodies like the International Court of Justice, and the role of international and regional organizations. Specialized topics include international responsibility, cyberspace sovereignty, cyber warfare, cybersecurity regulations, and sustainable development.

6. In-Depth Studies in Criminal Law
This course covers the principles of Jordanian criminal law, including the concept of crime, punishment, criminal liability, and participation in criminal acts. Students study specialized topics such as criminal intent, justifications, defenses, alternative penalties, and the overall theory of crime and punishment.

7. In-Depth Studies in Civil Procedure Law
This course examines judicial jurisdiction, case theory, procedures, and judicial rulings, including appeal methods and enforcement processes. Specialized topics include the theory of interest in lawsuits, judicial decisions, electronic litigation, and urgent judicial procedures.

8. Real Estate Law
Students explore original property rights, including definitions, characteristics, ownership elements, scope, and legal restrictions. Topics include common ownership, family property, and specialized subjects such as pre-emption rights, maintenance conditions, and the validity of committee rulings on property disputes.

9. Insolvency Law
This course examines the general provisions, objectives, and philosophy of insolvency law. It covers procedures for declaring insolvency, legal consequences, and specialized topics such as the role of the insolvency agent, procedural stages, termination, and international insolvency regulations.

10. Mediation and Arbitration for Dispute Resolution
The course covers the theory, types, stages, and independence of arbitration, along with comparison to alternative dispute resolution methods like reconciliation, conciliation, and expert opinions. Students study arbitration decisions, enforcement, and mediation practices inside and outside courts, including virtual arbitration and the role of Jordanian courts in oversight.

11. Intellectual Property and Contemporary Technology Law
This course covers industrial and commercial property rights, their legal nature, historical development, and international frameworks. It addresses intellectual property and trademarks, their protection, relationship with electronic addresses, and unfair competition. Specialized topics include digital copyrights, intangible heritage management, emerging technologies, and related contractual negotiations.

12. Comparative Constitutional Law
Students are introduced to the principles of constitutional law, separation of powers, state authority, and the protection of rights and freedoms. The course examines Jordanian constitutional developments, including post-2011 amendments, parliamentary governance, social democracy, constitutional drafting methods, and electoral studies.

13. Administrative Litigation Procedures
This course studies the legal procedures governing the administrative judiciary, including filing and litigation rules. It also examines administrative authorities with jurisdiction over disputes and mechanisms for executing administrative rulings.

14. Comparative Constitutional Judiciary
The course provides a comparative perspective on constitutional courts, emphasizing separation of powers, rule of law, and individual rights protection. Topics include initiating constitutional lawsuits, distinguished legal rules, judicial oversight, and the binding nature of constitutional court decisions.

15. Human Rights in the Information Era
This course examines human rights within national, regional, and international frameworks, emphasizing the impact of technology on rights. Topics include the right to privacy, access to information, freedom of thought and expression, and emerging rights such as the “right to be forgotten.”

16. Criminal Procedures Law
The course details the stages of criminal proceedings, from investigation to trial, in accordance with Jordanian law. It covers guarantees of fair trial, accused rights, jurisdiction, authenticity of judgments, appeals, and emerging topics including remote litigation.

17. Cybercrime
This course introduces basic and advanced concepts in cybercrime, relevant national laws, criminal liability, jurisdiction, evidence, and emerging offenses. It examines crimes targeting individuals, property, intellectual property, and national security, as well as international cybercrime guidelines and governance.

18. International Criminal Justice
Students study international crimes, the International Criminal Court, its jurisdiction, and core crimes such as genocide, crimes against humanity, war crimes, and aggression. The course covers procedural stages, individual and state responsibility, and specialized in-depth studies of crimes like enforced disappearances.

24. Labor and Social Security Law
This course examines Labor Law and Social Security Law, including definitions, importance, sources, individual and collective contracts, dispute resolution, and social insurance for old age, disability, death, and workplace injuries.

25. International Responsibility in Cyberspace
The course explores standards governing state behavior in cyberspace, violations of international obligations, and the role of international law in ensuring stability and security. Specialized topics include protecting IT infrastructure, applying international legal standards, treaties and regulations, enforcement, and attribution of illegal acts in cyberspace.
