Program Description

The program aims to meet the increasing demand for specialists in urban design. It also aims to provide opportunities for holders of relevant undergraduate degrees to pursue their graduate studies, conduct scientific research, and explore modern methods and techniques suitable for designing and improving the urban environment, while addressing various design challenges arising from the rapid urban expansion to accommodate the growing population and meet their needs.

Knowledge and Understanding
  • Urban Identity: Develop a deep understanding of how to strengthen Arab and Islamic identity within contemporary Saudi cities.
  • Contemporary Theory: Grasp advanced concepts in urban formation, historical development of settlements, and the socio-economic forces shaping urban form.
  • Legal & Ethical Frameworks: Understand the administrative, planning, and legal systems in the Kingdom, including property rights, urban management, and professional ethics.

Professional & Technical Skills
  • Advanced Analysis: Master modern techniques for spatial analysis, including Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and 3D digital modeling for urban environments.
  • Design Proficiency: Acquire the ability to design at various scales, from detailed local streetscapes and public spaces to complex city center masterplans.
  • Urban Renewal: Gain expertise in urban redevelopment, renovation, and revitalization techniques within historic and institutional contexts.
  • Sustainability Integration: Learn to apply sustainability principles, including multi-modal transport planning and environmental impact assessment, to urban projects.
Research & Critical Thinking
  • Independent Research: Develop the skills to independently conduct, present, and defend scientific research that addresses current urban design challenges.
  • Problem Solving: Cultivate the ability to analyze complex urban issues—such as population growth and migration—and propose innovative, data-driven solutions.
  • Collaborative Practice: Enhance leadership and teamwork capabilities, preparing students to work in interdisciplinary environments in both public and private sectors.

-Admission requirements as stated in the unified regulations for graduate studies in Saudi universities.

-Applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree in planning, urban design, architecture, or equivalent.

-Full-time enrollment is generally required. However, in specific cases, part-time enrollment may be permitted with the approval of the student’s employer.

First Year – First Semester

URD563 – Urban Design in Society and the Local Environment – 3 Credit Hours
ADVU561 – Advanced Urban Analysis – 3 Credit Hours
URB571 – Urban Design Studio – 3 Credit Hours

First Year – Second Semester

[Elective/Research Preparation Course] – 3 Credit Hours
[Urban Studies Seminar] – 3 Credit Hours
[Technical Skills in Urban Design] – 3 Credit Hours

Second Year – Thesis / Research Project Track

Option 1 – Coursework and Thesis System:

  • Thesis Preparation and Research Methods – 3 Credit Hours

  • Thesis Project – 6 Credit Hours

Option 2 – Coursework and Research Project System:

  • Applied Research Project – 6 Credit Hours

  • Advanced Urban Design Elective – 3 Credit Hours

  • Professional Practice and Project Management – 3 Credit Hours

  • Total credits for Option 1: ~33–34 credit hours

  • Total credits for Option 2: 42 credit hours
