Program Description

The program track is structured to examine traditional Islamic knowledge and place such knowledge in the context of the challenges faced by modern society. Students explore diverse theoretical perspectives and thought traditions, such as postcolonial and decolonial thought, pluralism, scientific thought, media-driven discourse, and diaspora studies, in order to delve deeply into the complexities of contemporary debates.

The track is tailored for students who aim to advance their academic pursuit through a PhD degree and a career in academia, or for those students who look forward to employment opportunities across various sectors that can be enhanced with expertise in Islamic thought.

Hosting Institution

The program aims to equip graduates with the following core competencies:

  • Critical Analysis: Learn to critically approach and analyze complex issues related to Islam and Muslim societies.
  • Argument Development: Develop sophisticated, balanced, and evidence-based arguments to meaningfully shape contemporary discourses surrounding Islam.
  • Contextual Mastery: Examine traditional Islamic knowledge (Quran, Hadith, Fiqh) within the context of modern societal challenges like globalization, pluralism, and secularism.
  • Multidisciplinary Expertise: Engage with diverse theoretical perspectives, including postcolonial and decolonial thought, diaspora studies, and media-driven discourse.
  • Values of Moderation: Practice the values of moderation while navigating present-day complexities.
  • Advanced Research: Gain applied research skills necessary to contribute original findings to the field of Islamic studies.

 

* Core Academic Requirements:

– Bachelor’s Degree: A degree from a recognized institution in Islamic Studies, Middle Eastern Studies, Religious Studies, or related areas within the Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences.

– Minimum GPA: A strong academic record with a minimum GPA of 3.0 out of 4.0.

– Standardized Tests: While the GRE is not strictly required for Master’s programs at HBKU, applicants are strongly encouraged to take it to strengthen their application.

* Language Proficiency:

– English Track (Contemporary Islamic Thought):

IELTS: Minimum overall score of 6.5.

TOEFL iBT: Minimum score of 79.

– Arabic Track (Fiqh and Society)
:

Must demonstrate Arabic proficiency through previous studies or by passing an examination offered by the College of Islamic Studies.

Contemporary Quran and Hadith Studies – 3 Credit Hours
Applied Research Methodologies in Islamic Studies – 3 Credit Hours

First Year – Second Semester

Islam and Modernity – 3 Credit Hours
Islamic Thought and Postcolonial Studies – 3 Credit Hours
Islamic Law and Society – 3 Credit Hours

Second Year – First Semester

Islam and Politics in the Muslim World – 3 Credit Hours
Modern History of the Muslim World – 3 Credit Hours
Muslim Encounters with Other Societies – 3 Credit Hours

Second Year – Second Semester

Thesis – 9 Credit Hours

Notes:

  • Students choose three elective courses (9 credits total) from the following options:
    • Muslim Societies in Diaspora
    • Scientific Thought in Muslim Societies
    • The Media and Muslim Societies
    • (Or other electives offered within the specialization)
  • Students may also select one elective from the CIS catalog if desired.
