Program Description

The program is designed to graduate highly competent and well-trained residents who are capable of working independently and providing optimal patient care in the field of general surgery.

  • Possess a strong knowledge of the principles of surgery.

  • Formulate comprehensive and reasonable differential diagnoses for common surgical diseases.

  • Recognize emergency surgical situations and manage them effectively.

  • Select appropriate investigations logically and conservatively, and interpret their results accurately.

  • Manage common problems in general surgery and be aware of alternative management options.

  • Perform specified surgical, diagnostic, and therapeutic procedures, especially in emergency cases and common surgical conditions.

  • Communicate effectively with patients, their relatives, and colleagues.

  • Maintain organized and informative medical records.

  • Continuously pursue education and updates, and share knowledge with others in the field.

  • Advise colleagues from other specialties regarding surgery-related issues.

  • Adhere to high ethical and professional standards.

  • Academic Qualification: Possession of a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degree or its equivalent from a recognized medical school. King Saud University often requires a minimum grade of “Good” for admission.

  • Clinical Training: Successful completion of a one-year rotating internship.

  • Licensing & Examinations: A valid result in the Saudi Medical Licensing Examination (SMLE), also known as the Saudi Commission for Health Specialties exam.

  • GPA Standards: A cumulative GPA of at least 3.5 out of 5 is generally required for competitive specialties.

General Surgery Residency Program (5 Years)

This program is conducted in collaboration with the Saudi Commission for Health Specialties (SCFHS).

Junior Residency (R1–R3)
  • Core Surgery: 24 months in General Surgery.

  • Rotations in Subspecialties: 12 months rotating through specialties such as ICU/Critical Care, Trauma, Urology, Orthopedics, and Plastic Surgery.

  • Training Focus: Pre-operative and post-operative care, basic suturing, and assisting in major surgical cases.

Senior Residency (R4–R5)
  • Advanced Practice: Residents take on high-level responsibilities in the operating theater and in managing surgical wards.

  • Leadership: Leading the surgical team during on-call shifts and managing complex emergency cases.
