Program Description

Discover the mysteries of ancient Egypt with AUC’s interdisciplinary minor in Coptic Studies. Dive into the rich history, art, literature, and religion of the Coptic period, bridging Pharaonic and Islamic eras.

Gain insights into rich history, art, literature, and religion of Coptic period, develop unique skill set showcasing range to potential employers, enhance primary studies with insights from multiple disciplines.

High school diploma or equivalent, English proficiency test (IELTS/TOEFL), personal essay, two recommendation letters, must be enrolled in a major at the university

Requirements (15 credits):
EGPT 400/5150 – Introduction to Coptic (3 cr.)
Any two of the following:
EGPT 342/5120 – History of Egypt in the Graeco-Roman Era (3 cr.)
EGPT 445/5160 – Selected Topics in Coptic Studies (3 cr.)
Any two of the following:
ARIC 324/3324 – Non-Muslim Communities in the Muslim World (3 cr.)
ARIC 344/3344 – Caliphs and Sultans in the Age of Crusades and Mongols (3 cr.)
ARIC 370/3270 – The Age of Transition: Early Islamic Art and the Pre-Islamic Past (3 cr.)
Notes:
Appropriate courses from other departments may be substituted.
