Program Description

The Department of Mathematics provides students with a robust and extensive background in Mathematics and enables students to appreciate the power of Mathematics and its role in human culture. This track prepares students to become statisticians in a world that is becoming more and more quantitative. Many professions depend on statistical measurements to make decisions in the face of uncertainty. Statisticians use quantitative abilities, statistical knowledge, and communication skills to work on many challenging problems.

Students graduating with a BS in Mathematics will be able (to have):

1.Manipulate and analyze data numerically and/or graphically.

2.Communicate mathematical ideas, written and verbally, in a clear and organized way.

3.Relate mathematics to real world problems.

4.Use appropriate technology to analyze and solve mathematical problems.

5.Demonstrate in depth information about area of specialty.

6.Demonstrate ability to receive professional training to enhance employability and success in a doctoral program.

Hold a secondary school certificate recognized by the Lebanese Ministry of Education, obtain “permission” from the Equivalence Committee for foreign programs, competitive admission based on 50% SAT and 50% grades 10 and 11 averages.

1. Foundational and Core Mathematics

Students are required to build a strong mathematical base:
  • Calculus Sequence: Covers single and multivariable calculus (Calculus I, II, III, IV).
  • Linear Algebra: Essential for statistical modeling and data analysis.
  • Differential Equations and Numerical Methods: Provides tools for mathematical modeling and computation.
  • Introduction to Higher Mathematics/Discrete Mathematics: Focuses on logic and proof techniques.
2. Specialized Statistics Courses

The statistics option focuses heavily on the theory and application of statistical methods:
  • Probability Theory/Applied Probability: Introduces the mathematical basis of probability and random variables.
  • Statistical Inference: Covers hypothesis testing, confidence intervals, and the theoretical foundations of statistics.
  • Applied Statistics/Regression Analysis: Focuses on methods for modeling relationships between variables.
  • Applied Multivariate Analysis: Methods for analyzing data with multiple variables.
  • Statistical Software: Students learn to use statistical packages (e.g., R, SAS) for data analysis.
