Program Description

The Department of Journalism and Digital Media was established in the 2020/2021 academic year to keep pace with the technological transformations in the media field. This came after digital media became dominant in the media industry, with global print newspapers transitioning to electronic ones and an increasing reliance of satellite channels and radio stations on digital media.

– Understanding the foundations, principles, and fundamental concepts in the fields of public communication, journalism, and digital media in particular.
– Understanding the role of media, its functions, and its impact on public opinion.
– Familiarity with the professional, ethical, and legislative standards governing international work.
– Knowledge of the historical and technological developments that form the basis of the media world.
– Familiarity with the nature of work in international institutions and its requirements.
– Understanding the methods and rules of editing and global production in the field of journalism and digital media.
– Understanding the concepts and methodologies of international research.

High school average minimum 60% for Jordanian students and 50% for non-Jordanians.

Introduction to Communication (803110)
Prerequisite: None
This course introduces the fundamentals of communication, including its forms, types, levels, models, and effects. It emphasizes mass communication, exploring its tools, characteristics, functions, responsibilities, and ethical and legal dimensions. Students also study the communication process, its elements, barriers, interactive multi-communication, key concepts, recent transformations in the field, and essential communication skills.


Jordanian Media (803111)
Prerequisite: None
This course examines the emergence and evolution of Jordanian media, its features, and the legislation shaping its development from the Emirate era to the present. Students learn about the role, functions, and impact of Jordanian media, its political, cultural, and developmental significance, professional standards, ethical and legal frameworks, and major media channels.


Public Opinion and Propaganda (803210)
Prerequisite: 803110
This course focuses on public opinion, including its definition, types, components, divisions, methods of influence, and measurement. It also explores propaganda, its origins, development, methods, elements, and models.


Communication Theories (803310)
Prerequisite: Completion of 60 credit hours
This course provides an overview of communication concepts, types, and models. Students study communication theory, including influence theories, dependency theory, uses and gratifications, agenda setting, cultivation, framing, gatekeeping, policy-making, and media violence. The course also covers theories of digital and new media, emphasizing the link between media research and communication theory.


Media Research Methods (803311)
Prerequisite: Completion of 66 credit hours
Students learn the principles and development of mass communication research, including research types, methodologies, sampling, data collection, validity and reliability testing, documentation, and report writing. Students are trained to formulate research topics, identify problems, define objectives, and develop hypotheses, with a focus on descriptive research.


Historical Development of Mass Media (803115)
Prerequisite: None
This course traces the historical emergence and evolution of mass media in the Arab world and globally, from books and newspapers to cinema, radio, television, and digital media. Students analyze historical factors influencing media development and societal impact.


Communication and Society (803116)
Prerequisite: None
This course examines communication functions in modern society and the interaction between media and societal activities. Students discuss mass media’s role in social change, addressing social issues, and professional media ethics.


Contemporary Arab Media (803118)
Prerequisite: None
Students study current Arab media, key issues it addresses, and the challenges it faces regionally and internationally.


International Communication (803312)
Prerequisite: None
This course introduces students to international communication theories, global media flow, cultural globalization, media dominance, and pluralism. Students learn about foreign media missions and centers, required competencies, and effective communication in international contexts.


Media Translation (803410)
Prerequisite: 803213
This course develops English-language skills for journalism, including translation of media content between English and Arabic, and evaluating texts for adherence to style and accuracy.


Introduction to Journalism & Digital Media (803121)
Prerequisite: None
Students learn the foundations, principles, ethics, and professional standards of journalism, including press workflows, planning, digital media characteristics, production methods, and digital content creation.


Journalistic Writing (1) (803122)
Prerequisite: None
Students study press release writing, principles, and rules of journalistic writing, editing, and evaluating press materials. Emphasis is on news and press report structures, sources, drafting, and practical exercises using print and digital platforms.


Introduction to Digital Promotional Communication (803211)
Prerequisite: None
This course introduces advertising, public relations, image management, and commercial marketing. Students learn basic planning and execution of digital promotional campaigns.


Media Ethics & Legislation (803212)
Prerequisite: None
Students explore philosophical and legal frameworks of media work, media laws, the Jordanian Journalists Syndicate, press ethics, and regulations governing media practices. They also practice producing media content in compliance with professional standards and legislation.


Media Skills in English (803213)
Prerequisite: English Language (1) (9400123)
Students develop English-language skills for journalism and media, including content creation, information sourcing, and evaluation of English media materials for writing, style, and terminology.


Digital News Reporting (803221)
Prerequisite: Journalistic Writing (1) (803122)
This course trains students in writing digital news reports using media applications, emphasizing characteristics of online news and essential reporting skills.


Principles of Journalistic Writing (2) (803222)
Prerequisite: Press Writing (1) (803122)
Students study interviews, press articles, opinion columns, analytical writing, and practical techniques for drafting and editing various journalistic content.


Digital Photojournalism (803230)
Prerequisite: None
Students learn visual storytelling, photography in media, image functions, editing, and processing for press use.


Graphic Design for the Media (803231)
Prerequisite: None
Focuses on Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop for media applications, including creating visual graphics, practical exercises, and project work.


Digital Image Processing (803232)

Covers audio-video technology, production, editing, and broadcasting using software tools. Students learn digital video techniques, camera language, shot composition, montage, and media production standards.


Radio and TV Programs (803235)

Introduces types and structures of radio and TV programs, guest selection, question preparation, program planning, and practical exercises in different formats.

Students learn data journalism, story design, fact-checking, data collection, infographic design principles, production process, and practical exercises.

Focuses on specialized media reporting in economic, cultural, scientific, gender, political, and other fields, including writing methods and case studies.


Publication Layout & Productions (803320)

Covers print and digital newspaper and magazine production, including editing, layout, graphic direction, headlines, and production planning.


Mobile Journalism (803340)

Students learn to produce and publish media content via mobile devices, covering research, verification, photography, recording, editing, and live broadcasting.

Explores social media platforms, characteristics, communication rules, media campaign strategies, and journalistic applications.

Students learn website creation, content management, and platforms such as WordPress, Joomla, and Drupal, including hosting and domain setup.
