The Department of Psychology prepares students to make their choices about their future practice in psychology. It adopts a multidisciplinary approach and brings into play theories from biology, developmental and social psychology, psychoanalysis and positive psychology to explore the dynamics of development, adaptation, well-being and mental health. Theories are examined within a comparative framework that elucidates their basic concepts, history, variants and applications. Courses offered by the department incorporate a significant practical element allowing students to build a deeper understanding of the reality of the studied phenomena. Upon completion of the program, students will be able to:
-Demonstrate knowledge of the theories of development across life span; the biological basis of human adaptive and non-adaptive functioning and the learning and personality mechanisms standing behind well-being, mental health and/or psychopathology.
-Demonstrate skills in interpreting professional reports that assess psychological functioning.
-Demonstrate critical abilities in reading academic references and research in different fields of psychology.
-Identify and generate research designs to various questions within the field of psychology.
-Demonstrate abilities to communicate, orally and in writing, understanding of a wide array of psychological phenomena.
Hold a secondary school certificate recognized by the Lebanese Ministry of Education, obtain “permission” from the Equivalence Committee for foreign programs, competitive admission based on 50% SAT and 50% grades 10 and 11 averages.
- Core Psychology: Introductory courses, the history of psychological thought, statistical methods for research, and introduction to psychological disorders.
- Major-Specific Courses: Advanced topics may include clinical psychology, social psychology, cognitive psychology, developmental psychology, and counseling psychology.
- Liberal Arts and Social Sciences: A BA in Psychology often includes general education requirements in humanities and social sciences to foster critical thinking, communication, and interpersonal skills.
