Program Description

The MSc in Physiology at King Saud University is a 2-year intensive program that designed to graduate professionals equipped with advanced physiological knowledge, research methodologies, and instructional skills to address health challenges within the Saudi community.

  • Scientific Knowledge: Acquire a deep understanding of human body functions and the physiological basis of health and disease.
  • Research Competence: Master practical skills and laboratory techniques applicable to modern physiological research.
  • Critical Awareness: Develop the ability to critically analyze scientific data and current developments in the field.
  • Professional Preparation: Be fully equipped to pursue a PhD or academic teaching careers in physiology.
  • Degree: A full-time Bachelor’s degree in Medicine and Surgery (MBBS) or other relevant Health Disciplines.
  • GPA: A minimum cumulative GPA of “Good” (2.75/5), with specialty course grades of at least “Very Good” (3.75/5).
  • Examination: Passing a mandatory written entrance examination held by the department.
  • English Proficiency: While some specific scores vary by year, general university requirements typically include tests like TOEFL or IELTS.

The program is divided into two distinct years:

Year 1 – Taught Modules
  • Content: 12 modules/courses covering core physiological sciences.

  • Core Content: Advanced study of organ systems, including:

    • Cardiovascular system

    • Respiratory system

    • Digestive system

    • Nervous system

    • Renal system

    • Endocrine system

    • Reproductive system

  • Specialized Courses: Examples include PSL 580 (Human Physiology) and PSL 582 (Applied Human Physiology), focusing on in-depth functional understanding and clinical applications.

Year 2 – Research Phase
  • Focus: Hands-on laboratory research project.

  • Thesis/Capstone: Students conduct an original research project aimed at addressing health problems within the Saudi community.

  • Transferable Skills: Training in scientific writing, data analysis and interpretation, and oral presentation.
