Program Description

The Master of Applied Finance – Financial Technology at the University of Wollongong in Dubai (UOWD) equips professionals with the skills to lead the FinTech industry. This specialised program combines core financial principles with advanced technological applications, providing expertise in blockchain technology, digital banking, algorithmic trading, and financial data analytics. By integrating finance and technology, the program enables graduates to identify opportunities for innovation, improve financial processes, and develop solutions for real-world challenges.

The Program learning outcomes for the Master of Applied Finance program and the major in Financial Technology is provided below:

  1. Integrate technical, theoretical and industry knowledge as it relates to the operation of the organization of and participation in local and international finance.
  2. Critically apply technical, theoretical and industry knowledge and skills to propose solutions to routine and/ or emerging problems in finance.
  3. Exercise professional judgement to propose solutions to problems in diverse contexts using economic, finance, regulatory and ethical perspectives.
  4. Communicate appropriately in oral, written and visual forms with relevant stakeholders.
  5. Work appropriately with others in order to achieve outputs relevant to finance.
  6. Conduct an applied research project.
  7. Reflect on performance and feedback to identify learning opportunities and self-improvement.

Financial Technology concentration Learning Outcomes

In addition to the Master of Applied Finance learning outcomes, students will be required to meet the following proposed learning outcomes for this major, which is as follows:

  1. PLO1:  Inspect a variety of financial assets and range of investment scenarios using analytical tools and processes for financial and investment decisions.
  2. PLO2:  Apply financial technology strategies grounded in responsible professional practice and principles of sustainability.
  3. PLO3:  Propose effective technology-based solutions, employing rigorous analysis and critical evaluation.
  4. PLO4: Explain the complex relationships between investors, financial institutions, regulators, and markets across a range of investment and financing contexts.
  5. PLO5: Apply knowledge effectively in financial technology to make informed decisions.

* Applicants with a bachelor’s degree in the relevant field of study, or its equivalent, with an overall GPA between 2.5 and 2.99 (on a 4.0 scale) may be conditionally admitted to a master’s program, only if they meet the necessary english language requirement. Such students must take a maximum of 18cp of subjects studied for the master’s degree during the period of conditional admission and must achieve an overall WAM of 55 in their first 3 subjects at the University. Students who fail to achieve this standard may have their enrolment discontinued.

** Applicants with a bachelor’s degree in the relevant field of study, or its equivalent, with an overall GPA between 2.0 and 2.49 (on a 4.0 scale) may be conditionally admitted to a master’s degree, only if they meet the necessary english language requirement and they will be required to complete a maximum of 18cp remedial non-credit bearing subjects prior to enrolment in their chosen Master’s degree. Students must achieve a minimum WAM of 55 in these subjects in order to progress to the master’s degree or may have their enrolment discontinued.

[2] The Master of Applied Finance is an advanced degree for students who have a recognised bachelor’s degree in Business, Engineering, Maths or IT related specialisation.

At UOWD, all classes are taught in English. To enrol in a master’s degree, applicants are required to submit proof of English language proficiency through one of the following tests:

  • IELTS Academic: An overall score of 6.0, with at least 6.0 in Reading and Writing, and 5.0 in Listening and Speaking.
  • TOEFL Internet-based Test (iBT): A minimum overall score of 79, with at least 20 in Writing, 18 in Reading, 17 in Listening, and 16 in Speaking.
  • Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic: An overall score of 54, with a minimum communicative skill score of 54.

    – If you are seeking credit for prior learning, you will need to submit an official academic transcripts showing all courses studied and the grades obtained, syllabus details (including information on course content) for the courses you have successfully completed and an explanation of the grading system. Your eligibility for Credit for Prior Learning will be decided in consultation with UOWD’s Faculty Offices prior to the beginning of the program.

*The Master of Applied Finance – Financial Technology requires the successful completion of 72 credit points of subjects. To complete this program, it will normally take you five or six trimesters (based on 3 trimesters per year where you take 2 subjects). The capstone subject, BUS 922 Business Research Capstone should be completed within the final session of study.
