Program Description

The program aims to qualify specialists in Physical Therapy, Speech and Hearing Disorders Therapy, Occupational Therapy, and Respiratory Therapy, and to produce distinguished research that helps enhance health and contributes effectively to serving and developing the community.

Graduates of the program are expected to demonstrate the following competencies upon completion: 
  • Original Research Contribution: Ability to design and execute independent, original research projects that advance the theoretical and clinical knowledge of rehabilitation sciences.
  • Advanced Clinical Inquiry: Integration of in-depth knowledge of rehabilitation theories with evidence-based evaluation and treatment methods.
  • Academic Leadership: Qualification to take on leadership roles in academic institutions, guiding policy development and mentoring future health professionals.
  • Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Proficiency in working within multidisciplinary healthcare teams to solve complex patient and community health challenges.
  • Academic Background: Applicants must hold a full-time Master’s degree in physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech-language pathology, or a relevant health discipline from KSU or an accredited institution.
  • Grade Point Average (GPA): A minimum GPA of 3.75 out of 5 (or equivalent to “Very Good”) is typically required for doctoral-level admission.
  • Standardized Tests:
    • English Proficiency: A score of at least 61 on the TOEFL-iBT or 6.0 on the IELTS is required.
    • Aptitude Tests: Some tracks may require a score of at least 148 in the Quantitative section of the GRE-General test or a score of at least 265 in the GRE-General overall.
  • Professional Status: Obtainment of professional classification as a specialist (at minimum) from the Saudi Commission for Health Specialties is mandatory for clinical health care applicants.
  • Departmental Assessment: Candidates must pass a written examination (often requiring at least 60% to pass) and a personal interview conducted by the Department of Health Rehabilitation Sciences.
  • Research Proposal: Submission of a detailed research statement or proposal outlining the intended area of study is a standard requirement for PhD applications.
