Program Description

The Department of Mathematics provides students with a robust and extensive background in Mathematics and enables students to appreciate the power of Mathematics and its role in human culture. This track prepares students to become actuaries, the financial experts who specialize in the Mathematics and laws of the insurance industry. Actuaries need a strong background in Mathematics to understand the behaviour of insurance claims and investments. Most actuaries work for insurance companies, but others work in the public sector or private consulting firms. Students trained as actuaries are also prepared for jobs as statisticians, demographers, and mathematicians.

Students graduating with a BS in Mathematics will be able (to have):

  1. Manipulate and analyze data numerically and/or graphically
  2. Communicate mathematical ideas, written and verbally, in a clear and organized way.
  3. Relate mathematics to real world problems.
  4. Use appropriate technology to analyze and solve mathematical problems.
  5. Demonstrate in depth information about area of specialty
  6. Demonstrate ability to receive professional training to enhance employability and success in a doctoral program

Hold a secondary school certificate recognized by the Lebanese Ministry of Education, obtain “permission” from the Equivalence Committee for foreign programs, competitive admission based on 50% SAT and 50% grades 10 and 11 averages.

1. Foundational and Core Courses

Students are required to complete a robust set of foundational courses: 
  • Mathematics: A comprehensive sequence of Calculus courses (I, II, III, IV), Linear Algebra, and Real Analysis.
  • Probability and Statistics: Core courses in probability theory, mathematical statistics, and statistical methods.
  • Computer Science: An introductory course in programming to develop computational skills. 
2. Specialized Actuarial Science Courses

The concentration focuses on specialized topics that directly align with professional actuarial exams and VEE requirements: 
  • Financial Mathematics: Covers the theory of interest and financial derivatives.
  • Actuarial Mathematics: In-depth study of life contingencies, survival models, and life insurance mathematics.
  • Risk Theory: Focuses on the assessment and modeling of various types of risks.
  • Models for Life Contingencies and Financial Economics: Prepares students for specific professional exam topics.
