Program Description

​The Department of Basic Human Sciences is a department of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences at the University of Petra and is responsible for both compulsory and elective university requirements courses.

9400100 National Education (3:3-0)
This course introduces students to patriotism, national loyalty, and citizenship. It explores Jordan’s strategic location, ethnic composition, and historical civilizations, including Islamic heritage, Ottoman rule, and the establishment of the modern Hashemite Kingdom. The course examines the Hashemites’ role in the Arab Revolt, the policies of King Abdullah I, King Talal, King Hussein, and King Abdullah II, including his “Jordan First” policy. It also covers Jordan’s political system, constitutional development, democratic progress, societal characteristics, major challenges, national security, economy, population strategy, and cultural, educational, and informational initiatives.

This course provides an overview of the state, including definitions, types of states and governments, branches of government, political ideologies, political parties, and pressure groups.

9400109 Military Sciences (3:3-0)
Focuses on the structure and development of the Jordanian Armed Forces and its branches. Topics include types of wars, the Public Security Directorate, General Intelligence, Civil Defense, and the role of the military in national development and global peacekeeping. Key conflicts such as the Arab Revolt, 1948, 1967, Al-Karamah, and 1973 wars are analyzed.

9400131 Jerusalem and the Palestinian Cause (3:3-0)
Explores the origins and historical development of the Palestinian cause up to the end of the British Mandate in 1948. Covers Palestinian conditions post-World War I, the Zionist movement, British policies, struggles against the mandate, and Palestine’s position in the United Nations.

Examines the history of science in the Arab and Islamic world during the Middle Ages, including scientific communication, translation, and the Arab scientific renaissance. Explores the relationship between science, technology, and society, emphasizing the impact of modern science and technology on social development and developing countries.

Provides foundational knowledge of first aid to preserve life, reduce suffering, and prevent deterioration in emergencies. Covers CPR, emergency response procedures, and practical first aid applications.

Explores the relationship between environmental components and development, emphasizing sustainable development. Topics include climate change, air and water quality, biodiversity, and the seventeen Sustainable Development Goals.

9400123 Communication Skills in English (1) (3:3-0)
Develops students’ English proficiency for professional contexts, focusing on listening, verbal and non-verbal communication, storytelling, dialogue, persuasion, conflict resolution, CV writing, and presentations. Emphasizes comprehension, critical thinking, and active class participation.

9400124 Communication Skills in English (2) (3:3-0)
Builds on previous communication skills through relevant texts and exercises. Covers reading, writing, speaking, and listening for academic and professional contexts, emphasizing opinion expression, vocabulary development, and study skills.

9500111 Food & Nutrients in Our Life (3:3-0)
Covers definitions, importance, daily recommendations, and dietary sources of food and nutrients. Examines nutrition’s relationship to health, food groups, diet principles, food safety, preservation, and nutrition across the life cycle and physical activity.

9400113 Communication Skills in Arabic (1) (3:3-0)
Enhances Arabic language communication skills, including grammar, morphology, comprehension, and written expression. Focuses on understanding texts critically, spelling rules, and effective written communication.

9400114 Communication Skills in Arabic (2) (3:3-0)
Expands on prior Arabic skills with oral and written expression, using classical Arabic, multimedia, presentations, sentence structure, rhetorical techniques, and semantic understanding for effective communication.

Introduces essential personal and professional skills for success, including self-awareness, communication, problem-solving, critical thinking, time management, organization, planning, teamwork, leadership, and responsible decision-making.

9400107 Leadership and Social Responsibility (2:2-0)
Develops social leadership and citizenship skills, enhancing students’ leadership, individual and group values, and emphasizing practical leadership and social responsibility.

9400103 Human Civilization (3:3-0)
Explores foundational concepts of civilization, including culture, originality, and contemporary relevance. Discusses theories of civilizational unity and multiculturalism, factors influencing the rise and decline of civilizations, and examples such as Greek, Roman, Arab-Islamic, and Chinese civilizations.

9300105 Entrepreneurship & Innovation (2:2-0)
Covers definitions and types of innovation, its importance, sources, theories, forms, strategies, and challenges. Explores entrepreneurship, creative ideas, business incubators, and the role of innovation in organizations and society.

9700102 Human Rights (3:3-0)
Examines the evolution of human rights internationally, including the UN, Universal Declaration, international covenants, regional conventions, Arab and Islamic organizations, and Jordan’s legal stance regarding international human rights treaties.
