Program Description

The University of Petra introduced the Law major in 2011 as one of its academic fields. Since then, the College has continued its distinguished journey in supplying the labor market with well-qualified students in various legal fields. The College has become a key institution in legal education and training at the national level, relying on highly qualified faculty members and providing the necessary tools and services to ensure quality education. This has resulted in a supportive learning environment capable of producing and disseminating knowledge.

Upon completing all graduation requirements for the Bachelor’s Degree in Law, the student is expected to achieve the following:

Knowledge (K)

  1. Explain the fundamental concepts across the different branches of law.

  2. Identify legal materials, rules, and principles, recognize their gaps and shortcomings, and propose suitable legal solutions.

  3. Acquire legal knowledge related to information technology and artificial intelligence.

Intellectual Skills (I)

  1. Interpret the legal texts studied in the program.

  2. Compare national legislation with regional and international laws.

  3. Analyze judicial rulings in various legal fields and provide informed commentary on them.

This course provides a general introduction essential for studying law. It is divided into two parts: the first covers the theory of law, including definitions, characteristics, branches, sources, interpretation, application, and repeal of law; the second addresses the theory of rights, including definitions, types, classifications, holders, objects, scope, sources, use, and proof of rights.

701112 – Sources of Obligation (3:3-0)
Prerequisite: 701111
This course offers an analytical study of the theory of obligations, its types, and sources. It covers contract theory, contract classification, conditions of formation, validity, enforceability, and the scope of contracts regarding parties, content, interpretation, and dissolution. It also addresses unilateral acts as sources of obligations, tort liability, liability for acts of things, and obligations arising from beneficial acts, with an analytical approach to Jordanian civil law, its sources, comparative legislation, and relevant judicial precedents.

701131 – Principles of Commercial Law (3:3-0)
Prerequisite: 701111
This course covers the general principles of commercial law, including the emergence and development of commercial law, the Jordanian Commercial Law, the definition of a merchant, conditions for conducting business, commercial obligations, book-keeping, registration in the commercial register, the need for a trade name, and general study of commercial contracts according to Jordanian e-Transactions Law.

This course introduces administrative law, its origin, sources, characteristics, and scope of application. It includes central and decentralized administrative organization, the public function, and public finances.

702151 – Political Systems and Constitutional Law (3:3-0)
Prerequisite: None
The course introduces the state, its pillars, characteristics, types, origins, and legal accountability. It examines government structures with a focus on democracy, electoral processes, separation of powers, and general constitutional principles, including types of constitutions, their formation, supremacy, and termination.

Prerequisite: None
This course introduces public international law, its development, relationship with domestic law, binding nature, and sources, including treaties, international customs, general principles, judicial decisions, and international organizations. It also covers non-state actors, peaceful dispute resolution, armed conflicts, and the general theory of neutrality.

702171 – Criminal Law / General Part (3:3-0)
Prerequisite: 701111
This course studies the general theory of crime, including the definition of criminal law, its temporal and spatial application, justification rules, material and mental elements of crimes, and general provisions on criminal responsibility. It introduces the fundamental rules governing criminalization and punishment policy.

This course equips students with research skills, presentation, and writing techniques necessary for undergraduate legal assignments and research projects.

701213 – Rules of Obligation / Civil Law (3:3-0)
Prerequisite: 701112
This course examines obligations in four sections: effects of obligations (voluntary or compulsory execution), characteristics of obligations, transfer of obligations (assignment of debt and rights), and the extinction of obligations.

This course covers general provisions of corporate law, including types of companies, their formation, management, and dissolution.

This course studies common contracts, such as sales and lease contracts, covering definitions, characteristics, elements, effects, and legal provisions, including landlord-tenant law.

This course addresses labor law principles, its evolution, scope, international framework, sources, individual and collective labor relations, social security law, and insurance provisions.

The course introduces commercial papers, including promissory notes, bills of exchange, and checks, covering definitions, formal requirements, negotiation, maturity, acceptance, payment, and legal enforcement.

The course examines the judiciary system, types of courts, civil proceedings, filing requirements, litigation rules, trial procedures, presentation of evidence, civil appeals, and case studies of Jordanian law and judicial precedents.

This course covers property rights, including ownership, scope, protection, restrictions, types, acquisition, and derivative rights such as mortgages, pledges, possession, and privileges.
