Program Description

The Department of English Language and Literature offers a rich exposure to language and literature. The philosophy of the Department to language development promotes an interdisciplinary approach which gears students towards academic success through a curriculum designed to address every language need. Coursework in the departmental program is wide-ranging and includes linguistics (the study of language: phonology, morphology/syntax, semantics), discourse analysis, and literary criticism. The critical periods of literature are covered in core courses, along with a variety of electives that include drama, romantic poetry and prose, creative writing, and both cinema and gender studies. These courses represent a rare opportunity to explore in depth the worlds of language, literature, culture and the human condition. In addition to a deep immersion in language, literature and culture, the study of English prepares students for almost every profession. Both the commercial and government sectors actively recruit English majors because of their understanding of social and cultural issues, their training in critical and analytical thinking, and their writing and communication abilities. In a rapidly changing job market, employers value, above all, the flexible thinking, resourcefulness and communication skills of English graduates.

Upon the successful completion of the BA curriculum in English Language and Literature students will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate a knowledge of the theoretical foundations of the English literature and language.
  2. Use theory in practice in the field of linguistics and literature
  3. Critically analyze, evaluate and respond to conceptually complex texts.
  4. Write well organized, developed and researched academic essays in literature and linguistics.
  5. Conduct academic research in the fields of literature and linguistics.
  6. Use multi-media tools to communicate effectively.
  7. Display the ability to reflect on one’s learning
  8. Observe ethical standards in all scholarly activities

Hold a secondary school certificate recognized by the Lebanese Ministry of Education, obtain “permission” from the Equivalence Committee for foreign programs, competitive admission based on 50% SAT and 50% grades 10 and 11 averages.
