Program Description

It aims to qualify translators scientifically and practically in translation and its fields, and introduce students to the most prominent theories in translation and scientific research skills in the field of translation studies. 

Knowledge & Theory

  • Translation Theory: Master prominent classical and modern theories, concepts, and movements in translation studies (e.g., works by Nida, Vermeer, and Catford).
  • Research Methodology: Proficiency in designing and conducting academic research, formulating hypotheses, and adhering to referencing conventions.

Cognitive & Specialized Skills

  • Bi-directional Proficiency: Produce grammatically and structurally correct translations between Arabic and the target language (English or French).
  • Pragmatic & Contextual Awareness: Communicate the connotative meaning and pragmatic effect of original texts.
  • Technical Specialization: Solve complex translation problems in fields such as Medicine, Law, Politics, and Scientific Research.
  • Modern Technologies: Use and evaluate the quality of distinguished modern software and digital tools, including Computer-Assisted Translation (CAT) and audiovisual subtitling tools.

Professionalism & Values

  • Analytical Criticality: Move from “habitual” translation to conscious analytical procedures when encountering novel linguistic problems.
  • Ethical Practice: Adhere to the professional ethics and standards required in diplomatic, legal, and governmental translation contexts
  • Academic Degree: You must hold a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university in a related field (e.g., English/French Language, Literature, or Translation).
  • Minimum GPA: A cumulative GPA of “Very Good” (3.75/5.00 or equivalent) is generally the baseline for eligibility.
  • Standardized Tests:
    • Post-Graduate General Aptitude Test (PGAT): A score of at least 70 is typically required.
    • English Proficiency: For the English track, applicants usually need a minimum score of 6.5 on the IELTS or an equivalent TOEFL score.
  • Departmental Exam: Most candidates must pass a written entrance examination and/or an interview conducted by the Department of English or Department of French to assess translation potential.
