Program Description

The program is designed to develop highly skilled psychiatrists capable of managing complex mental health conditions within the Saudi healthcare system.

1. Clinical & Diagnostic Competence
  • Comprehensive Assessment: Perform expert psychiatric interviews, including detailed mental state examinations and biopsychosocial formulations. KSU Medical City – Psychiatry
  • Diagnostic Precision: Utilize the DSM-5 and ICD-11 criteria to accurately diagnose complex mental health conditions.
  • Pharmacotherapy: Demonstrate mastery in prescribing and monitoring psychotropic medications, including managing side effects and drug interactions. 
2. Therapeutic Skills
  • Psychotherapy Mastery: Deliver evidence-based interventions, specifically Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and supportive psychotherapy.
  • Emergency Management: Rapidly assess and manage psychiatric crises, including suicide risk and acute agitation. 
3. Consultation-Liaison (Psychosomatic) Proficiency 
  • Integrated Care: Successfully manage psychiatric symptoms in patients with co-morbid medical and surgical conditions (e.g., delirium in post-op patients or depression in cancer care). 
4. Research & Academic Scholarship
  • Evidence-Based Practice: Critically appraise psychiatric literature and integrate new findings into clinical practice.
  • Original Research: Design and execute a research project, a mandatory requirement for graduation from the KSU Fellowship. 
5. Professionalism & Advocacy
  • Ethics & Law: Apply Saudi mental health laws and international ethical standards regarding patient autonomy and involuntary admissions.
  • Stigma Reduction: Act as an advocate for mental health awareness within the Saudi community.

Degree: An MBBS degree or an equivalent medical degree recognized by the university.

Academic Standing: A minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75 out of 5.0 (or “Good” grade).

Clinical Training: Successful completion of a one-year rotating internship.

Professional Certification: A valid career classification and license from the Saudi Commission for Health Specialties.

Language Proficiency: A minimum score of 61 in TOEFL iBT or an equivalent score in IELTS (6.0) or the STEP test.

Documentation: Submission of an updated CV, a personal statement regarding career goals, and at least three official letters of recommendation.

Employer Clearance: For employed applicants, a letter of no objection (release letter) is required to ensure full-time commitment for the 4-year duration.

Selection: Passing a mandatory personal interview conducted by the department.

The KSU Fellowship in Psychiatry, which functions as a clinical Master’s/Doctorate level program.
